Madder Lake: Aussie Rock

Madder Lake is a name etched in Australian rock history. Formed in Melbourne in 1968 as student band San Sebastian, they adopted their now-iconic name in 1971, drawn from a vivid crimson artist’s dye. Their style, a blend of progressive rock and psychedelic blues, resonated with fans looking for something deeper, more experimental. Inspired by British acts like King Crimson and Traffic, Madder Lake helped lay the foundation for a uniquely Australian take on the genre.

A Defining Force at Sunbury Festival

Madder Lake’s legacy is forever tied to the legendary Sunbury Pop Festival. They opened the very first event in 1972 to a rapturous crowd and returned as headliners in 1973, later reigniting energy after Queen’s lukewarm set in 1974. Their live performances, particularly “Down the River” and “12lb Toothbrush” captured on The Great Australian Rock Festival – Sunbury 1973 LP, remain unforgettable moments in Aussie music history.

Landmark Recordings and Chart Success

In 1973, Madder Lake made history by releasing “Goodbye Lollipop”, the very first single from the newly formed Mushroom Records. Their debut album, Stillpoint, followed, reaching #13 nationally and delivering the breakout hit “12lb Toothbrush.” While their second album, Butterfly Farm, didn’t reach the same commercial success, it remains a cult classic for progressive rock enthusiasts.

Legacy, Reunions, and Cultural Impact

Madder Lake’s influence extends far beyond their chart presence. They were one of the first to earn Mushroom Records a Gold album and even supported The Rolling Stones during their 1973 Australian tour. Though disbanded in 1976, the band has reunited multiple times, most recently for Sunbury anniversary concerts, demonstrating their enduring connection with fans and their deep imprint on Australia’s music legacy.
