Formed in Melbourne in 1969, Spectrum quickly became one of Australia’s most innovative rock bands. Led by Mike Rudd, with original members Bill Putt, Lee Neale, and Mark Kennedy (later replaced by Ray Arnott), the band carved a unique space in the local scene. Known for thoughtful lyrics and experimental soundscapes, Spectrum embraced the progressive rock genre while also catering to pub crowds through their danceable alter ego, The Indelible Murtceps.
Spectrum made waves in 1971 with the release of “I’ll Be Gone”, a moody, reflective track that struck a national chord and hit #1 on the Australian charts. The song became a staple of Aussie rock and showcased the band’s distinctive songwriting and sound. It remains one of the most enduring tracks in Australia’s music history and a highlight of Spectrum’s impactful but relatively short recording career.
Spectrum played a defining role in the Sunbury Pop Festival, the landmark event that shaped the future of Aussie rock festivals. In 1972, they performed as both Spectrum and The Indelible Murtceps, earning praise for their dual sets. Their live version of “I’ll Be Gone” featured on EMI’s official Sunbury LP. They returned in 1973, cementing their reputation as Sunbury favourites and key contributors to Australia’s early festival scene.
Although Spectrum disbanded in April 1973, their legacy continued. Mike Rudd and Bill Putt went on to form Ariel, another progressive rock project. Decades later, Spectrum reappeared for select performances, including the 50th Anniversary Legends of Sunbury show in 2022, proving their music still resonates. Their blend of artistic complexity and down-to-earth live energy helped set a blueprint for bands navigating Australia’s emerging live circuit in the 1970s.
At Australia’s Biggest Gig Guide, we honour the bands that shaped Australia’s live music legacy. Spectrum’s unforgettable Sunbury performances and their cultural contributions continue to inspire new generations of artists and fans.
